Why you can’t “walk off” stress (and what to do about it)

Why you can’t “walk off” stress (and what to do about it)

Hope your day got off to a smooth start – especially because I want to talk to you about STRESS. We’re heading into a busy time of year with new schedules, etc. and I know a lot of you are feeling some pressure…

…and I also know a lot of you think you should just toughen up and “push through it”.

Been there. But here’s a spoiler alert: You can’t do it. That’s because stress isn’t all “in your mind.” It’s also in your body.

Your stress response system is a primal reaction… it’s hardwired into your system to keep you safe and alive.

In this email I am going to outline some important things you need to know about stress and how it affects you – info that also will help you:

  1. Use stress to your best advantage and
  2. Learn how to conquer it so it doesn’t run (and ruin) your life.

Spotlight Sunday: Sue Fenwick! “Today I feel in the best shape of my life, have such a positive outlook on life, and I’m a role model to my kids”

I am 44, had 4 kids and work full time. My journey started in 2014 when I saw myself in a holiday snap and was shocked at my size. This is a picture of me at that time:

I was nearly 14 stone, a size 16, a drinker, and a smoker. I felt really sluggish most days, I was short of breath walking up stairs and I wobbled when I walked.

I made the decision that I was going to lose weight.

I tried all sorts of diets; Slim fast, Weight Watchers, the one with red and green days, but nothing worked consistently.

Spotlight Sunday: Nikki Davies! “I have more energy, I am so much fitter, I feel years younger and I have so many clothes I can now wear again!”

Sixteen months ago I decided that the time had come to make a change in my life. I felt stiff, overweight and old. I had noticed PW appearing on Facebook for a few months but I always thought it wasn’t the right time, but this time I took the plunge and signed up for their New Year Revolution challenge.

I have always hated gyms but PW is different, it’s just special, everyone is so welcoming, Anthony is amazing and the font of all knowledge for everything you need to know as well as being so motivational and encouraging. Jamie, who was one of the elite trainers, is my inspiration having been through the journey himself, but all trainers are superb and are with you every step of the way.

Like most people I’d spent Christmas over indulging with the mindset that I’d lose it all in January. Trouble is I’d said that for, perhaps, the last 6 Christmases and never lost it in January so year upon year I’d added to my weight.

I’d start a diet lose a few pounds, feel amazing then congratulate myself by “treating” myself to cakes, wine and any other thing I could convince myself I’d earned, thereby undoing all my good work. By the time I’d repeated this cycle twice a year I’d be thoroughly fed up, give up entirely, and hooray it’s Christmas again… I’ll worry about it in January.

This January it was a bit different.

Whilst browsing Facebook to kill the time, because, let’s face it, what else is there to do in January… I’d see my friend Tania pop up checking in at PW Physique and Fitness. My initial reaction was… she’s mad who works out at 5:45am and seems happy about it!! Surely that won’t last!

But day after day I saw these check-ins and I became curious and started asking questions, and all I got was glowing reports of this amazing place with the most amazing trainers and the people that went there.

Six short weeks later she posted her success story and that’s when I realised that this was something I had to try so I got in touch with Anthony and booked my taster session.

Spotlight Sunday: Debbie Marriott! “I lost 7 inches off my waist and realised PW had become like a family to me!”

Spotlight Sunday: Debbie Marriott! “I lost 7 inches off my waist and realised PW had become like a family to me!”

When I got married my waist was 22 inches, and I had never worried about what I ate or whether I exercised. Over the next eight years I had four children and was one of those annoying people who went back into jeans very quickly still not having to worry about weight!

As my children got older my husband and I started all-inclusive holidays while the grandparents had the kids and the older they got the longer the holidays got! Once they had grown up and left home the holidays became more regular and that’s when the weight started to creep on. We were all inclusive after all if would be rude not to try and eat and drink everything in sight, right??

Over the next few years I had tried lots of different forms of exercise and was even still involved in amateur dramatics, dancing and singing, but still the weight crept on! I then had painful knees which slowed me down resulting in a replacement knee two years ago. After that I was scared to exercise in case it hurt and also the weight increase was obviously down to my age, going through the menopause and nothing would work right???? Wrong!!!

How Fitness Models Get a Tiny Waistline

How Fitness Models Get a Tiny Waistline

I hope you guys are having an awesome week so far! I had a fantastic conversation just this morning talking about waistlines.

It started off talking about belly-fat and moved on to how to get a tiny wasp-like (is the term they used) waistline.

A while ago, I did a workshop called The Swimsuit Body Solution (which I might do again closer to the summer), where I talked through a bunch of secrets the professional swimsuit models use to get their figure. You know, other than Photoshop… 😉

One of the things we covered was, what I called, body sculpting. It’s the illusion they create by their overall shape. If you just took their silhouette, for example, you’d notice they go in significantly at the waist. And that’s probably exactly what you’d note.

Your Coffee is Making You Fat (Try This Instead)

Your Coffee is Making You Fat (Try This Instead)

Occasionally after we’ve dropped Sir Maxalot off at nursery, me and Nic nip to a cafe on the way home to grab a cuppa and plan out our work day. Nic’s cafe of choice between here and nursery (and, more crucially, because it’s open at that time of the morning!) is Costa.

Now, you may not know, but you can actually check out the nutrition information of all the drinks at most of the major coffee shops… and it makes interesting reading!

As a general rule, the fancier the drink, the more calorific it becomes, and when I say calorific, I’m talking in excess of 500 calories and 50g of sugar… that’s nearly 13 teaspoons!

And this is before you’ve bought a custard cream that’s the size of a small hatchback! (Seriously, do they have a lab where they capture and perform experiments on biscuits?)

Here’s something you can have instead to get in your coffee fix, get it for less than 300 calories, and swap out all that sugar for a bonus hit of protein:

Food Friday: Raspberry and Lemon Overnight Oats

Food Friday: Raspberry and Lemon Overnight Oats

At our studio we start early. Our first session is 5.45am, so that means, as a trainer, we have to get up, get ready, and get out to be at the studio for 5.30am.

Out of all of our Elite Trainers, I actually live furthest away, so I get up at 4.45am on those days. As you can imagine, not just to maximise my sleep time but to make sure I’m not late, doing all of this stuff faster than a greased up ferret on a waterslide is pretty important!

Now, I’ll repeat until I’m struck down by a falling piano that oats (porridge) are the breakfast of champions. Add in a protein source, and you have everything you need in one cockle-warming, inviting bowl of goodness. But traditionally they’re not all that fast to make, and particularly if you do them in the microwave, are a bit of a liability… Porridge volcano, anyone?

So if you’re in a hurry in the mornings, Overnight Oats are the revelation you’ve been waiting for. If you find them a bit boring, or just need ideas to spice them up, try this high-protein, fruity recipe:
